Mini Review – Colored Pencil Painting Portraits

Yeah, I’m posting mid-week. Oops. Anyways. I only have a teensy bit of time today, so it’s uber short. But I hope that you’ll still enjoy it, nonethless!

Today I’m reviewing Colored Pencil Painting Portraits by Alyona Nickelsen. It is FULL of gorgeous pictures (the image below doesn’t do them justice).

So. I’ve been reading this book for months. Oops.

It’s not that it’s bad (I actually enjoyed this!) … I’m just not a non-fiction person.

Anyways. I ADORE colored pencils. I steal my big sis’s all the time, and I specifically like drawing people because COME ON, THE CHALLENGE. So this book was super cool. It was really easy to understand (except for the first couple chapters … it was filled with history + artsy terms). Everything that is used in the book is artist-level stuff, so not everything is doable at home, but for me, I was able to take a lot from it,so yay! (How to draw facial features, shading, blending, hair, etc.)

And I mean LOOK AT ALL THOSE GORGEOUS PICTURES, OMG. I MUST DEVOUR.

So. It was very good and educational and whatnot. The main downside is that it isn’t really “captivating”, so to speak, until about chapter four or five (for me). And if you just like to draw stuff at home … some things aren’t doable.

Something that I would like to point out, though, is that it is for PAINTING PORTRAITS, which is, like totally cool. Basically you’re using colored pencils to make them look like paint. Like, is that awesome or what???

Do I recommend this? Well, I’m not sure. It takes FOREVER to read … but is super educational. So if you love to draw, then try this! Unless your a high-fantasy person (hi!), then maybe not??? Hey, I’m not discriminating. Do what you please. 😛

I’m rating this 3 stars, though I think that it deserves more … I’m just hit or miss with non-fiction. Please enjoy!!!

Thank you, Blogging for Books, for this book! My opinions are all my own … blah blah blah.

Do any of you enjoy drawing? Or non-fiction? Or both? What do you like to draw/art?? Please let me know! I’d love to hear it! ❤ Or just chat … whatevs. 😛

  1. When I was little I won a few drawing competitions but as I aged I realised that I’m terrible at drawing? I can only really colour things in neatly which is why I thought I was an artiste when really… I was not heheh. I do like non-fiction though! As long as it’s on a subject I’m interested in, otherwise I’m a fantasy girl at heart 😉
