The King’s Scrolls by Jaye L. Knight

Peoples, we’re OVER HALF WAY DONE WITH THE FOUR WEEKS OF ILYON. Ah! Ahem. Today is book 2 in the Ilyon Chronicles by Jaye L. Knight, and it’s called The King’s Scrolls. Now, let’s cut the suspense and get on with it, shall we?? 😀

 Following the harrowing events that brought them to Landale Forest, Jace and Kyrin have settled comfortably into their new lives and the mission of protecting those under the emperor’s persecution. The fast approach of winter brings with it the anticipation of a quiet few months ahead. That is until the arrival of four mysterious, dragon-riding cretes who seek aid in a mission of great importance—not only to their own people, but to all followers of Elôm.

Hidden in the vast mining valley north of Valcré, a faithful crete has spent years sharing his knowledge with the destitute miners and their families and is known to possess what may be Arcacia’s last surviving copies of the King’s Scrolls—the Word of Elôm. Joining the cretes, those in Landale must find the crete teacher and bring him to safety, but it is a race against time. Should Daican’s men find him first, execution and the destruction of the Scrolls is certain.

When disaster strikes, all seems lost. Could Elôm have a plan even in the enemy’s triumph?

What I thought:

I read this book maybe a month and a half after Resistance, and maybe a month after Half-Blood so I needed to get back into the series. Though, it didn’t take me too long, actually! Miss Jaye is quite the talented author!

This book had more Jace (yayayayayayayay!), but with it, it also brought a new POV character: Timothy.

Honestly, I liked him, but I just wasn’t sold on him as a POV/MC character … but more on that below.

We get a lot more of Jace’s POV, and that’s awesome! But I think the real thing is … DRAGONS!!!!

Oh my goodness, the dragons! It’s like- And they’re like- And yeah! Just SOOOOO good!

So when I first started reading this I wasn’t even sure if I liked it! But the more I read, the more I liked. And though at first it didn’t come close to my love for Resistance, I still really liked it.

But the reread.

But the reread. It was soooo much better then! (I actually feel the same way with the two books prior.) And though I still prefer Resistance (even with its dragonlessness), this was even better the second time!!!!!!!!

Writing/Plot:

*squeals* Jaye’s writing! As I’m sure you know (at least, if you’ve read my previous two reviews) Jaye is one of my favorite authors, and I adore her writing! It just pulls at you, and makes you feel as if you were actually in the character’s place! So… *squeals again*

Ahem. The plot at this, about 2/3 of the way through, almost has a different feel then the first parts of the book. Like, it’s still BRILLIANT, but the focus shifts. Just a little bit, so as only I, the next Sherlock Holmes, could figure it out. (But, to explain that, I found out that around there was where Jaye combined two books, though rather awesomely.)

Characters:

So … JACE. KYRIN. KADEN. RAYAD. ACK!

Hehe, sorry ’bout that! Actually, no. No, I’m not.

I love all of Jaye’s characters! And I think that it’s so amazing how she can have a lot of POVs for only a small amount of time, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming! *dies by fangirling*

Anyways. Timothy. I liked his character, and he’s very Christianly (but in a good, non-annoying way!) and scholarly, but I just didn’t enjoy his POV as much. *shrugs* I’m just a picky reader, I guess.

Problems:

THE WRITING ERRORS ARE SO LITTLE THAT I CAN ACTUALLY COUNT THEM.

Writing errors are a big deal in reading for me! But this book does have five writing errors that I can remember. Yeah.

Umm… I guess with all of the POVs, some people might consider that bad? I, personally, found it to be done masterfully, but that’s just me. And about every other Ilyon fangirl.

Other/Summary:

Haha, so in case you couldn’t guess, I loved this book. 😉 But seriously.

VIOLENCE: Fighting; mentions towards Jace’s life in Half-Blood; beheadings (of course); torture; killing in fights; and just stuff along those lines. ROMANCE: There’s a little bit of hinting towards Jayrin (Jace and Kyrin’s ship); Jace noticing Kyrin, though in a sweet way; and that’s basically it. LANGUAGE: Only things like “he swore” or something like that!

YES I’d recommend this! Though, still the same as the other books, for teenagers, mostly.
